I ran a regression analysis in which I controlled for: (1) the day of the week, (2) time of the day, (3) length of the pump, and (4) whether I was at home or away. I alternated every day between using the Willow and Spectra pumps. To test this, I collected data for two weeks. Effectiveness at extracting milk: The good news is that the pumps are equally effective at extracting milk. This is a completely unbiased review that you should feel confident trusting.ġ. And importantly, I have NO affiliation with Willow or Spectra – neither company is paying me for my review. Given my training as a researcher in Silicon Valley, I’m excited to share with you my findings. I had so many questions and couldn’t find rigorous, unbiased information comparing the Willow with the Spectra. I struggled with whether to fork over $500 for a pump that I couldn’t return. Unfortunately, the Willow costs $500 and is currently not covered by insurance. You just look like Dolly Parton because the pumps protrude from under your shirt. For those who are unfamiliar, the Willow is a pump that you tuck into your bra, which means that you don’t have tubes or a large pump that you need to lug around. While venting to a fellow breastfeeding colleague about the challenges of pumping, she suggested checking out the Willow pump. Baby Pacific always wanted to pull on the tubes. You also need to be careful that the tubes don’t come undone or that you don’t lean the wrong way so that milk spills out of the containers. Even though you can carry the Spectra pump around, you’re still limited to staying within the privacy of your home or your pump room if you’re at work. Second, I grew tired of my immobility while pumping. It also killed the mood before bed with my spouse – being hooked up to a pump with my nipples visibly releasing milk did not put either of us in a sensual mood. There’s something about all the tubing that felt so crude. While at work and before going to bed, I connected myself to the flanges and tubes to milk myself. After 6 months, though, I grew tired of the Spectra for two major reasons. I chose the Spectra because: (1) it appeared to be the most effective breast pump, (2) it’s electric so I could carry it around while pumping, and (3) it was covered by insurance. I used the excellent Spectra breast pump for the first 6 months after my baby’s birth. Needless to say, I have spent a lot of time pumping since Baby Pacific’s birth. When I returned to work, I pumped every 3 to 4 hours. I continued to pump throughout my maternity leave so that I could put away extra milk. I pumped during the first few days when I had Baby Pacific to increase my supply. My response, “A good breast pump, like the Willow pump.” If you’re breastfeeding, a great pump is key. “What is the best piece of gear you have as a new mom?” A pregnant soon-to-be-mother recently asked me this question.
